The history of the Toraja tribe has been going on for a very long time. Before the name ‘Toraja’ was widely known, people in the mountainous region north of South Sulawesi called their area ‘tondok lepongan bulan’.
Their ancestors are thought to have come from the Dong Son region of Vietnam, which immigrated from the north to the island of Sulawesi. They then followed the river by boat until their boat could no longer continue.
That’s where they stopped and then went ashore and began to build settlements. From here begins the long history.
